Why we still answer the phone

A short defence of an expensive habit.

Every year somebody suggests we replace the desk with a portal. Every year we look at what the desk actually resolves, and it is the things a portal cannot: a driver at a closed gate, a consignee who has moved, a pallet that is not the pallet.

So the number stays on the site, and somebody picks it up.
